Profitability for Language Experts 1

The Profitability for Language Experts workshop is designed for translators and editors who want to better understand the financial side of their work. It covers key topics such as calculating business costs, forecasting income, and assessing the profitability of different projects. You’ll leave with practical tips for managing your translation business more effectively, ensuring that your work remains financially sustainable without overextending yourself.

Whether you’re new to the field or looking to refine your approach, this workshop offers straightforward advice for improving the profitability of your work.

The workshop is facilitated by Mili Viita and Tiina Kinnunen, who are members of Kääntäjämestarit ry. Mili specialises in transcreation and marketing and has over 20 years of experience in running her own business. Tiina is a subtitler and 30-year veteran of the translation business. Together, they’ve run this workshop for university students as part of the Kääntäjämestari university tour.

Profitability for Language Experts 2 – Finding your best clients

Now you’ve set your daily targets for your business, but do you recognise the most profitable jobs? They might not always be the ones with the best rate, but the ones with the smoothest overall process or with your preferred topics.

Learn comprehensive criteria for rating clients based on profitability, process efficiency, and personal preference, find strategies to identify and cultivate high-value relationships and get tips for streamlining your client roster for maximum success!

The workshop is run by NEaT member Tiina Kinnunen, who has over 30 years of experience in the translation business. She has presented this workshop in international conferences.

The tenth edition of the NEaT holiday party will be on 5 December. We’ll find ways to celebrate our anniversary in a festive atmosphere, sitting down with a feast and sharing memories together.

Join us in Helsinki on 5 December to eat and socialise with us. It’ll be the final celebration of our 10th anniversary, so come prepared for a birthday party and for toasts to the years gone by. Feel free to dress up!

You are warmly invited to an online workshop on sensitivity editing and translating led by Anna Merikallio of the University of Turku and NEaT’s very own Julie Uusinarkaus.

The call to be kind is an introduction to the principles of sensitivity editing and translating.

Language grows and adapts, and the words and phrases we might once have used can be unintentionally harmful. When we are aware of this and keep future readers in mind, the texts we produce will be available to a larger audience and keep language evolving towards greater accessibility and kindness.

The call to be kind will introduce you to the general principles of sensitivity editing and translating and the key factors in psychological accessibility. Having reviewed how they can be applied in practice, the workshop will divide into two groups to work on a selection of texts. Anna will lead one of the groups through the principles of working with gender in translation and editing. Julie will lead the other group through working through ableism issues, both physical and psychological, with a focus on working with clients as an editor. You can sign up for a group when you register for the workshop.
