NEaT hosts and participates in seminars, conferences and workshops several times per year to support editors and translators in their work. All upcoming events are posted under RECENT POSTS as they are scheduled. On any page, scroll down to Recent Posts or search by type of event.
If you would like to volunteer to present about a topic, let us know! We will provide a basic template to guide you in presenting your topic.

In the autumn join us on 28 September for our first NEaT up in Stockholm! If you are coming from Finland, we hope to see you on the boat.

2024
At the beginning of the autumn, members met up online on 6 September for an eVent.
Nordic Editors and Translators’ first conference, English as a Lingua Nordica Conference: Language in a Changing World, was held from 30-31 August in Turku.
The annual summer picnic was held on 17 August at Tokoinranta park in Helsinki.
The next Mini ELN seminar will be on the influence of the English language on the ELN Mini Presentation on the Influence of English in the Nordics was held on 13 May.
The annual AGM was held on 15 March, after which we will celebrate ten years of being NEaT.
January and February saw three online events, an online NEaTup on 9 January to celebrate the new year for those who missed the holiday party, a Mini ELN seminar on LLMs on 23 January to start the year, and an eVent on 22 February to talk about our professional lives.
2023
We celebrated the holidays together on the first of December, with the promise of meeting again after the turn of the year to touch base.
The autumn NEaTup was at Harry’s Bar in Helsinki on 28 September.
The annual picnic was held on 19 August, with a lovely crowd under the tent even though the rains never came!
The seminars held in 2023 included a very active online chat about ChatGPT, a fully booked SEO workshop, the very well-attended workshop on translating and editing gender and a panel discussion on the business side of offering language services.
Our English as a Lingua Nordica seminar was held on 21 April at the Language Centre of the University of Helsinki, and the Annual General Meeting was carried out directly after. A happy and satisfied NEaT up was found afterwards at Maya Bar & Grill.
2022
Professional development included a very focused and practical English as a Lingua Nordica seminar and a workshop on communicating with clients. We made sure to meet and socialize at the Annual General Meeting and the end of the year holiday party, with the theme of expecting the unexpected, and the always popular NEaT picnic in August.
2021
NEaT’s annual Christmas party was held on 3 December 2021 at 6 pm at Säästopankinranta 4 C 21 and online, with a follow-up Zoom A NEaTup social event on 28 January 2021, and the annual NEaT picnic was held in surprising sunshine on 21 August 2021.
On 16 November 2021, Kenneth Quek was to guide us on a course reviewing the tech tools we use in editing and translating.
We had many events online this year. A discussion on working in Sweden was had in our online NEaTup on Tuesday 9 November 2021. A debate on whose style matters in academic editing was had on Thursday 23 September 2021. And the NEaT words of the year/Uudissanat 2021 was held online on Tuesday, 8 June 2021. Read more here.

NEaT’s annual Christmas Party was had on 5 December 2020, and the annual NEaT picnic was held on 8 August.
Punctuation Points, a NEaT round table on using punctuation, was held on 22 October online.
The sixth annual English Today was held on 13 March, with an exciting programme about the clarity of language.
2019
Our annual Christmas Party was held 5 December 2019 at PAM’s premises in Hakaniemi Helsinki, and the summer picnic was on 17 August in Seurasaari, Helsinki.
A seminar discussion on practical considerations when editing scientific texts with statistics was held on 25 November, at the University of Helsinki Language Centre.
Business skills were honed at a panel discussion Business skills: What I wish I had known at the beginning on 21 October at FinnBrit. Thank you for attending perhaps the most popular NEaT event so far!
An exciting seminar was held on May 7: a subtitling seminar with Tiina Kinnunen on May 7 at the FinnBrit Society.

The 5th English Today seminar was organized at the Finnbrit Language Centre in Helsinki on the 15th of March 2019. More information here. The event receiveed ravishing reviews.
Professional language revisor and NEaT board member Kenneth Quek taught a workshop that introduced noun stacking and offered strategies for dealing with it and creating clear sentence structures. The workshop was aimed specifically at translators who work with English as their target language. The course was open to members of Kieliasiantuntijat and NEaT. The course was organised by Nordic Editors and Translators NEaT and Kieliasiantuntijat ry/Language Experts.
2018
Our annual Christmas Party was held at PAM in Hakaniemi on the 5th of December, and the annual picnic was in Suomenlinna on 18 August.
NEaT was represented at Nordic Translation Industry Forum in Oslo from 21 to 23 November. More information about NTIF18 here.
There were two panel discussions this year: the panel discussion To Flag or To Correct was a seminar for editors at the University of Helsinki 24 October 2018. A panel discussion on peer post-translation editing was held 19 October at Finnbrit, Helsinki.
NEaT was represented at Scandinavian Language Associations’ Meeting SLAM! in Malmö 15 September (read more here) and at METM18 in Girona from 4 to 6 October (read more here). NEaT was also represented at the SENSE2018 conference in The Netherlands in June. Read more here.
A peer review workshop was held 31 May 2018 at the University of Helsinki.

NEaT’s annual Christmas party was held on the 5th of December 2017 in Hakaniemi, Helsinki. NEat’s annual picnic was held on August 19, 2017 on Suomenlinna. Despite the rain, a good number of folks turned out for food and drinks at Suomenlinnan Panimo.
Another roundtable, this time on punctuation, was held on November 9, 2017. Taught by Ian Mac Eochagáin and Alisdair McLean, this course discussed the punctuation issues that every editor and translator encounters. More information here.
On 14 September, Rebecca von Bonsdorff taught Electronic Resources for Language Professionals. And Stephen Stalter lectured on Statistics for language professionals at KAJ on August 24, 2017.
NEaT’s annual general meeting 2017 was on April 13 at 5 pm at the Finnbrit Society (Fredrikinkatu 20 A 9).

2016
The NEaT Christmas Party 2016 and our first Translation Slam was held on 5 December at PAM in Hakaniemi, Helsinki. The annual NEaT Picnic took place in Suomenlinna on Saturday, August 20, 2016. We had great weather and a fun atmosphere.
The Style Discussion roundtable was on Friday, October 7, 2016. Rebecca von Bonsdorff lead the discussion with the help of Alice Lehtinen and Terese Forster. This session covered the serial comma, singular they and the passive voice. Read summary here.
We did a workshop at the KAJ offices on the 15th of September 2016 at 5 pm. Julie Uusinarkaus presented examples of writing a personal style guide for your own use or for a specific client. Read more on the KAJ site here.

Our Christmas party was held on 3 December 2015 in Helsinki.
We presented our organization to many groups this year. NEaT was presented by board members Julie Uusinarkaus and Virve Juhola to communication professionals at ProCom ry’s International Communications Group on 18 August 2015. NEaT was presented among SKTL, KAJ and other organizations at International Translation Day on Friday 2 October in Turku. And very importantly, NEaT was presented at the METMeeting (METM15) conference in Coimbra, Portugal, from 29 to 31 October 2015. Stephen Stalter talked about oral expression coaching; Julie Uusinarkaus and Virve Juhola presented the origins of NEaT for a another program thread. NEaT’s Annual General Meeting 2015 was held on Tuesday 21 April at the ‘kabinetti’ space of Pub Leijuva Lahna on Eerikinkatu, Helsinki. After the AGM, we joined their weekly pub quiz in Finnish and did our own quiz in English. Please see invitation here.
