English Today: The Successful Language Professional

Nordic Editors and Translators and the Finnbrit Society are pleased to present the second annual English Today seminar on March 11 from 3 to 7 pm. This year’s English Today is all about helping the language professional succeed. The main part of the programme is an intensive seminar on the competencies a successful language professional needs. Afterwards, our main speaker, well-known translator Eva Buchwald, will inspire us with her experiences in her talk entitled “Dramatic License: Some Aspects of Translating Finnish Plays into English”. In the evening, we invite you to join us for dinner at The Cock, where you can network with other professionals and share your own success story.

Our featured speaker is Dr Eva Buchwald. Eva Buchwald studied at the School of Slavonic and East European Studies at the University of London. She is Chief Dramaturg at the Finnish National Theatre, where her role includes developing new Finnish writing and seeking international work for the programme. Eva also adapts work for the stage, most recently Ian McEwan’s Saturday. Eva has translated over twenty Finnish plays into English. Many of these, such as Juha Jokela’s Fundamentalist, Sirkku Peltola’s Finnhorse and Sofi Oksanen’s Purge, have enjoyed readings or productions in the UK and the US.

The price is 30 euros for NEaT and Finnbrit members, and 40 euros for non-members. The price includes all four talks and light refreshments during the break. Dinner at The Cock should be paid separately.

NEaT, or Nordic Editors and Translators, is a local organization that supports and promotes editors, translators and other language professionals in the Nordic countries.
